Misc. Notes

On Monday I start my graduate work, both the classes that I teach (how to write to freshmen) and the classes I am taking (three plus a colloquium). As such, I will be wonderfully overwhelmed. I am already overwhelmed.  Thus, I will be updating this blog more infrequently than I already do. I will be frequently infrequent.

Moreover, I’m beginning to wonder whether this blog is worth it or not. I’m not sure I’m saying anything different about romance that the twelve hundred other blogs on romance aren’t already saying and saying better. I wondering if I should even bother continuing with it with my work load the way it is going to be.

This is a long way of saying that you should probably not expect too many updates in the future.

  1. FWIW, I keep mine and post maybe once or twice a month, usually on non-academic stuff, but recently I have been thinking about ruminating publicly a bit more… also, classes generally give great blog topics… So, maybe keep it and change the focus if that is where you see it going – nothing is set in stone and it should be about what you want to do with it… my two cents, anyway…

“Better” is subjective and in any case whether that’s important or not depends on whether you’re blogging for yourself or for other people, doesn’t it? Unless I’ve got you confused with someone else who uses the same icon, did you not recently say at Jessica’s blog, when she was feeling the same way, that “I blog mostly for myself. I choose topics based on what I find interesting at the time or what I am trying to work through”?

  3. I have a perfect solution! A monthly column at Racy Romance Reviews! You can even talk about teaching freshman writing, but you must call it first year writing or I will whack you with my Rosie book end (see my blog banner for details).

Failing that, I will simply say have a wonderful year, and only blog when you feel like it!

  4. Tessa – - You are right, classes do give good blog topics. I was taking 3 classes and teaching 2 when I wrote this entry so I was assuming I would be overwhelmed and overworked. However, I am now only taking two classes so that means I might have more time to blog. I hope

Laura – - Panic changes everything. I did indeed say that, but that was before I realized exactly how much I was going to be doing this fall. Lately, I’ve been boring myself. My brain has been a desert of ideas. This may just be August but one never knows.

Jessica- – I will happily talk about what happens to me teaching freshman how to write either here or in a column and I surely will use the term first year writing because I do not want to be whacked with your Rosie book end. It looks like a rather hefty object and I imagine it would hurt a lot.

Thanks all for the ideas. Cross your fingers for me.
